Paysandú Departament

It is placed on the west on the river Uruguay and borders to the north on Jump, to the east on Tacuarembó and on the south on Río Negro.

Limits: It is placed on the west on the river Uruguay and borders to the north on Jump, to the east on Tacuarembó and on the south on Río Negro.

Most of the territory belongs to the basin of the river Queguay, whose low course constitutes a species of axis, of which there get rid two watersheds of the river Uruguay: on the south, the chopper of the Cluster of palms, from Algorta to the city of Paysandú; to the north that of San Jose. The first one divides the waters of the tributaries of the Black creek and of the river Queguay; the second one separates the East of the creek Guaviyú and of the river Daymán.

Orography: In the center and this one of the department, the elevation Arapey is constituted by a series of basaltic effusion that include sandstones blocks and for the choppers of San Jose, Queguay and Haedo. The half northeast of the department is of basaltic nature, often stony; the half south-west is covered of sediments (sandstones, conglomerations, slimes, limestones) and is more suitable for the agriculture. The sandstones of the formation or elevation Mercedes outcrop principally in the chopper of San Jose, from Quebracho to Flat Hill.

Hydrography: The most important islands are the Big one of the Queguay and Almirón. The navigability of the river Uruguay up to the Paysandú port stumbles over serious difficulties, by which the shipment cannot be used in accordance with his real capacity.

Economy: Most of the department is dedicated to the pasture of dairy and sheep cattle. Sunflower and beet is cultivated in the whole territory. On the west and south-west the agriculture develops cerealera, with cultivation of wheat, corn, and close to the city of Paysandú, citrus fruits, vine and vegetables. They are important the baby of poultry, the beekeeping and the dairy activity. Lately they have installed important factories to themselves: of sugar, textiles, leather, of alcoholes, of beer, of cement, of sunflower oil, sawmills, workshops, etc. This city is the second industrial center of the Republic. His fundamental activity is the industrialist, the concentration of cereals and other industrial cultivation. Also one emphasizes the port activity.

Important cities: Paysandú that is the capital, is an agricultural, industrial center and port on the river Uruguay. Then we take other centers of importance as a sound Guichón, New Paysandú, Drum and Quebracho.

The principal tourist centers are: the thermal ones of Guaviyú and Almirón. Other sights are the People White House (366 inhabitants), Limekilns of the Bellows, Cascade of the river Queguay, Bridge Paysandú-Colón, the stays La Paz and The Limekiln, between other places.


HISTORICAL CRITIQUE:

The origin of the cardinal city, it goes back 1750, one emphasized the function that fulfilled the port of deposit and later shipment of leather and other cattle products.

It was possessing a strategic geographical position, as a consequence of it it grew fast in population and it was until the middle of the XXth century the second city of the country, it had the second hospital of the country, and important constructions.

The first national government took place to the north of Paysandú in Purification, where Artigas established the bases of his Government.

In repeated occasions the square was attacked, reminding like the most memorable defense that to him of 1864 - 1865, when Brazilian troops and of General Venancio Flores they submitted for one month to a bloody place the defenders directed by the Gral. Leandro Gómez, Lucas Píriz and his partners, and that it reached with the massacre of the heroes.

The called Defender of Paysandú is commemorated like one of the most notable defenses of the city, having resisted only 1.400 men devoid of good armament, to more than 17.000 hard equipped soldiers.

On June 8 of every year it celebrates his declaration like city, in the so called "Celebrations of Paysandú City", there being realized several activities as gaucho parades and cultural and sports spectacles.

With the event of the first saladero in the year 1841 a very important change took place and the crafts passed to the industrialization of the meat and the leather. One century later there produces the big industrial process to itself with the installation of big tanneries, brewery, oilcans, sugar bowl, citrícolas, textile, decorative sheeting, between others.
